NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program  designed to provide all 13- to 20-year old youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experiences they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

A trained and dedicated staff of youth leaders and instructors work closely with qualified adult mentors to conduct this course. Participants and their training teams are immersed in an environment where they practice and experience state-of- the-art leadership skills for highly effective teams–firsthand!

This intense six-day training course, scheduled for June 10-16, 2012, is held in an outdoor setting at Camp Horace Johnson on beautiful Island Lake, 25 miles north of Duluth, Minnesota.

Participants who have completed the NYLT course return to their home unit equipped with a toolbox of current-day leadership skills that enables them to better understand their role as a youth  leader who can—and should—be shaping the direction of their unit. Each trained participant knows not only HOW their unit should function, but also WHY. He or she is  better equipped to communicate with other Scouts or Venturers and with their adult leaders. Under their leadership, their unit will function better and achieve goals that are possible of a high performing troop or crew.

Who May Attend NYLT?

This course is a co-ed course open to Boy Scouts and Venture crew members. Scoutmasters and Crew Advisors select and nominate the participants who may attend NYLT, sending those who currently or will soon hold key leadership positions in their unit. Scouts attending must be at least 13 years old by the first day of the course and have obtained the rank of First Class (no exceptions). Crew members must have attended VLSC or ILSC. Nominees should have completed their unit’s own Leadership Training experience and have served in at least one leadership position within their unit.
