Day Camp - Horace Johnson

Dear Parents and Cub Scouts,

Welcome to the Northern Trails Cub Scouts Day Camp “Medieval Times”!  These are the Discoveries of the Northern Trails Cub Scout Day Camp; your Journey is to have a great time June 25 and 26 at Camp Horace Johnson on Island Lake, Duluth Minnesota.

Saturday & Sunday:  Registration beings at 8:30 a.m. and you will need to make sure you have Health Forms A and B turned into the Voyageurs Area Council Service Center as soon as possible if you have not turned these in already.  These forms cover all authorizations for the camp including BB Gun, Archery and Medications. Without these forms, no medication can be given by any staff member.  Clearly mark all medication with your son’s name and pack number.  Also all medication must be in the original bottle with name, dose, and how frequently it is to be taken.  Youth will not be allowed to participate in any Day Camp activities without these forms being turned in!  The forms can be found at the following link:

The Saturday and Sunday closing ceremonies are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Early Departure:  If your son needs to leave camp early, please have him turn in a permission slip (signed by you telling us when he will be leaving camp).  Health forms A and B are where people authorized to pick up your son can be listed.  Under no circumstances will any boy be allowed to leave camp early without this permission slip nor will he be allowed to leave with anyone other than a person you listed forms A and B).

Lunch:  Your son needs to bring a bag lunch and beverage each day.  A snack for each day should also be sent.  Also, remember that it may be quite warm – a cooler is highly recommended.

Clothing & Equipment:  The official uniform for camp will be the Day Camp T-Shirt.  They will be distributed to participants on Saturday morning.  All boys are encouraged to bring a raincoat in case of rain and a jacket or sweatshirt in case of cooler weather.  Please pack a WATER BOTTLE for your son.  Drinking water will be available at the camp but it may be hot and we encourage the boys to drink a lot of water throughout the day.  It is highly recommended that the boys wear shoes instead of sandals because they’ll be active throughout much of the day.  PLEASE MARK ALL OF YOUR SON’S EXTRA CLOTHING AND/OR EQUIPMENT WITH HIS PACK NUMBER AND HIS NAME!

Other Important Information:

  • Please have your son wear sunscreen (reapplying during the day is a great idea) and encourage him to drink plenty of water during camp.
  • In the event of rain, camp will still be conducted.  If the weather is severe, camp may be cancelled for the day.  Please listen to local radio stations for an announcement regarding cancelation.
  • In case you need to get a hold of the camp for an emergency, please contact the Voyageurs Area Council Service Center at (218) 729-5811 or (800) 939-5811, the camp has a cellular phone and will be contacted.  Please list all possible phone numbers where you can be reached on your son’s health form.
  • The Camp Market Place (Trading Post) will be part of a station.
  • Instructions for the Egg Drop are enclosed.  Your son should bring this project to camp on Sunday.  NO PARACHUTES ARE ALLOWED!

We are looking forward to seeing you at camp.  We know that it will be a fun experience discovering Medieval Times.

Sincerely,
