Glacial Times

The Glacial Times is a communication tool for Scouts and Scouters living in the seven county Glacial Trails District. Glacial Trails District covers Minnesota’s Carlton and Pine Counties; Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties in Wisconsin and Gogebic County in Michigan. Glacial Trails District is comprised of 47 units with over 800 youth and over 250 adult volunteers.

Roundtables- Glacial Trails volunteers provide several Roundtables for unit leaders. These are intended to provide chances to network and share ideas and issues with other unit leaders and to provide a model of what a unit meeting should look like and how it should be run. There is a chance to share information about upcoming Council and District activities and events.

August Roundtable-  At the August Roundtables, you will have a chance to review the Council and District activity schedule, learn about how to conduct an annual unit planning session and share ideas about how to meet the Journey to Excellence standards. Roundtables will be conducted locally and will not be an iTV session this year as the network is not available.

Ashland- August 8             Saron Lutheran Church 7 p.m.

Cloquet- August 8              Zion Lutheran Church 7 p.m.

Superior- August 8             Concordia Lutheran Church, 6:30 p.m.

Askov- August 13               East-Central Elementary, Board Room, 7 p.m.

Popcorn Sale Time- It is time again for units to gear up for the annual popcorn sale which will kick off in September! Has your unit selected a Popcorn Kernel? Training for Unit Popcorn Kernels is set for August 22 from 7- 8 p.m.  More information will be available soon.

Fall Cub Scout Recruitment- Nothing energizes a pack like the inflow of new Cub Scouts and new parents. Our annual coordinated Cub Scout Recruitment Day is set for September 19. Training for school night coordinators is scheduled for August 22 from 6-7p.m. Glacial Trails will conduct training at various sites. If you are willing to conduct recruitment at your local school, please plan to attend and contact Tom Meyer to coordinate efforts.

Fun with Son Events- In support of fall recruitment, Glacial Trails will conduct several Fun with Son events around the district. These half day events are intended to build enthusiasm, serve as a recruiting tool, and give kids a taste of what day camp is all about. FWS events are scheduled in Ironwood, Washburn, Superior, and Barnum again this year. We are in need of volunteers to help with these events as chairs, station chairs, and station helpers. Contact Tom Meyer to help out at 218-591-9181.

Webelo Action Camp- It is time for Webelo den leaders to begin organizing their den to attend the Fall Webelo Action Camp on Fish Lake north of Duluth. This is a great event and will happen one week earlier this year, on September 27-29. Check put the website for more information

Friends of Scouting presentations- As you all know, none of the registration fees paid by youth stay in our council, but are passed along to the National office. This means that support for your units must come from local sources. Our Friends of Scouting Campaigns are an important part of our funding and as of this date, many units have not scheduled their 2013 FOS presentations. Please look at your schedules and let Tom know when it works to have a presenter attend your Troop, Pack or Crew meeting. Please do your part to make our council financially stable.

Commissioners- Ever feel like your unit could use a helping hand? Your commissioner staff is ready, willing, and able to lend you their expertise and support. If you don’t know how to connect with your commissioner, call Harvey Hickok, your District Commissioner in Glacial Trails at 218-348-2596 or

2013 Day Camps- Glacial Trails held two day camps in 2013 and both were very successful. The Barnum Day Camp had 93 attendees and the Camp Newman Day Camp had 83 in attendance. Congratulations and a special thanks to Ellen Chicka and Barney and Jen Hollis for making these day camps happen!

In 2014 we are looking at adding a day camp at Little Girl’s Point near Ironwood. We have several volunteers ready to help but still need a chair for this event. In addition, we are looking for volunteers to be part of our day camp committee and to chair our Camp Newman Day Camp as Ellen is stepping down. Thank you to Larry Schmidt who has agreed to chair next year’s Carlton/ Pine County event.

Volunteer Opportunities- Glacial trails is blessed with many great volunteers. However, there is ample opportunity for you to step up and make a difference for an even larger population of kids. The following is a list of unfilled positions. Call Tom Meyer if you are interested in any of these.
