The Glacial Times is a communication tool for Scouts and Scouters living in the seven county Glacial Trails District. Glacial Trails District covers Minnesota’s Carlton and Pine Counties; Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties in Wisconsin and Gogebic County in Michigan. Glacial Trails District is comprised of 47 units with over 1100 youth and over 360 adult volunteers.

The Great Voyageur Expedition- Mark your calendars today!!!  May 2-4 at Pine City’s Northwest Company Fur Trading Post, Scouts from all across the council will join for a council-wide rendezvous. This will be open to Scouts from all programs, Cub Scouts (Day Programming only), Boy Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts and Explorers. Paddle a Voyageur Canoe, visit the historic trading post, compete in the obstacle courses, or try your hand at shooting sports! This will be an event your Scouts will remember for years!  Go to for more details soon!

Popcorn-   At this time, all units should have submitted their orders for additional popcorn and for the prizes with High Adventure Gear. Recruitment- Our Fall Cub Scout Recruitment was very successful with lots of new Scouts joining our packs. We still need to recruit about 60 youth however to match what we accomplished last year. If you have an application you haven’t turned in, please get it to the Service Center soon so they are covered by our insurance and become registered members of the Scouting movement as we promised. Shooting Sports- Are you an avid hunter, archer or shooting sports enthusiast? Join the Councils Shooting Sports Committee! Call your district executive to find out more!  Teach safe shooting and enrich the Scouting program!

Friends of Scouting presentations- Do you have a January or February Court of Honor, Blue and Gold or pack meeting scheduled that would be appropriate for your 2014 Friends of Scouting presentation? Now is the time to select your units FOS coordinator and get on the schedule! Family gifts are more important than ever for the health of your council!

Commissioners- Ever feel like your unit could use a helping hand? Your commissioner staff is ready, willing, and able to lend you their expertise and support. 2014 Day Camps- Glacial Trails plans to hold three Cub Scout Day Camps in 2014 and they only happen if people step up to help! Take a roll today in making Cub Scout Day Camp happen in your area!! The Superior Day Camp is currently without a chair. Last year’s camp was extremely successful and one of the best Day Camps in the council. Volunteer Opportunities- Glacial Trails is blessed with many great volunteers. However, there is ample opportunity for you to step up and make a difference for an even larger population of kids. The following is a list of unfilled positions. Call Tom Meyer if you are interested in any of these.

District Chair- Creates a “Vision for the District” and helps recruit volunteers

Vice-Chair for Impact and Participation (membership) – Support School Night to Join Scouting (fall recruitment) and Spring Tiger recruitment along with year-round membership growth.

Vice-Chair for Dynamic and Relevant Program – Lead a team to organize programs that strengthen Scouting

Vice-Chair for Resources and Finance- Give direction to and recruit our Friends of Scouting volunteers

District Popcorn Chair and Committee members

Family Friends of Scouting presenters

Family Friends of Scouting Chair and committee members

Community Friends of Scouting Committee members

Leaderhip Excellence and Culture (training) Committee members – Become part of the district team and help new leaders develop their skills and improve their units.

Commissioner - needed in Pine City, Esko, Superior, Drummond and Ironwood

Even if you have never worked at this level or are unsure of your time availability, any time you can give will make Scouting stronger!

Klondike Derby-   There will be two Klondike Derbies in 2014 within Glacial Trails. one each in Washburn and Cloquet. Staff is being recruited currently so let us know if you can help.

The Washburn Klondike will be held at the Washburn Forest History Center on February 8, 2014. Watch for more detail.

The Cloquet Klondike will be held at the Cloquet Forestry Center on March 1.

National Youth Leadership Training  - June 8-14, 2014- Camp Horace Johnson

Every Troop should be looking to send their current and future youth leaders to the best leadership training that our council offers for youth!  Make your life easier by giving your scouts the tools they need to lead your troop!!

Search and Rescue Camp-  Back by popular demand- SAR Camp is scheduled for late March at Crosswoods Camp in Drummond, WI.  Check the website for more detail.

Introduction to  Leadership Skills for Troops, Crews, and Ships.   Conduct your units IOLS in a group setting with at Lakewoods Resort in Cable, WI during Winterfest. The $50 fee covers all meals, training, and a hotel room. This training meets your units JTE Goal for elected youth leadership training. Questions.
