The Boy Scouts Of America’s National Annual Meeting

On Thursday, May 31 and Friday, June 1, 2012 the Boy Scouts of America held its National Annual Meeting in Kissimmee, Florida. Chris James, David Nolle and I attended the meeting as the official representatives of the Voyageurs Area Council. Pat Madden and Dave Orman from our council were also in attendance.

The two days were filled with general and break-out sessions as well as formal breakfasts, a regional luncheon, and the Silver Buffalo Banquet. I attended everything. (More below the jump)

The Journey-To-Excellence and Voice-of-the-Scout were discussed in many of the sessions. National President Rex Tillerson (CEO of Exxon Mobil) and Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca talked about how we are doing and about progress we are making on our national strategic plan. The 2013 National Jamboree was promoted and we heard about the new STEM and Messengers of Peace programs. Mike Rowe (from the TV show Dirty Jobs) spoke at the Americanism breakfast on Friday morning. Just like at the 2010 National Jamboree his message was well received.

Our new national president Wayne Perry and our new Chief Scout Executive Wayne Brock were introduced. Wayne Perry outlined his ideas for the future when he spoke at the Silver Buffalo Banquet.  Wayne Brock basically explained that he will be about continuing to execute our national strategic plan.

As a first time attendee I found the national meeting to be informative and inspiring. I now know what “The Main Thing” is. I think I already knew but it was good to hear it stated by Rex and others. You may know too but if you want to confirm your hunch, ask Dave, Chris or me. The Main Thing is crucial to our future success and is not a secret so any of us will be glad to share.

Dave Smith

Council Commissioner
