The council's strategic plan calls for community collaborations in the area of "Youth Advocacy & Strategic Relationships." Below is an opportunity to reiterate Scouting's fitness emphasis.

On Sat., Apr. 28, UMD will host the Northland’s third annual Community Wellness Day in Romano Gym from 11 am-3 pm. Community Wellness Day is a nationwide opportunity to learn about health, safety, financial literacy, and environmental awareness. This event is free and open to the public.

The keynote speaker will be Joel Salatin, an author and third-generation alternative farmer from Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.

Salatin was featured in Michael Pollan’s New York Times bestselling book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, the documentary Fresh: the Movie, and Food, Inc., the Academy Award nominated and best-selling independent documentary of all time.

UMD Health Educator Dori Decker, M.S. encourages everyone to explore Wellness Day. “It is a family-friendly event, so it will be an opportunity for people of all ages to be active and engaged,” Decker said. “There will be many children’s activities, including rock climbing on the indoor climbing wall.”

In addition to the climbing wall for the children, there will also be a bounce house, sumo wrestling suits, and activities with UMD athletes
