Local Scouts Launch Fleet of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)

No Stranger to Sustainability, Scouting Leads by Example

HIBBING— For more than a century, the Boy Scouts of America has been a leader in conservation education and environmental stewardship. In fact, you might say Scouting was green when green was just a color. Today, Scouting is moving from green to deep green, working across the organization to make sustainability both something that is taught and something that Scouting lives.

With the help of long-time Scouting supporters at Ford of HibbingExternal Link, the Voyageurs Area Council added three 2016 Ford Fusion Energi Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) to its fleet of staff vehicles. These join a 2014 Ford CMAX Energi. Covering 42,000 square miles of Northern Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin and a portion of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula means the Scouting staff drives nearly 100,000 miles every year to support the community organizations that charter Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Venturing crews, Sea Scout Ships and Explorer posts throughout the region.

“The transition to the PHEV vehicles is forecasted to reduce our overall travel costs by up to twenty percent,“ said David Nolle, Scout Executive and CEO for the Voyageurs Area Council. “This savings is an added benefit to our being able to lead by example.”
