Saving Childhood

We are excited to share a national media opportunity that we believe could translate into a local story or story for your news outlet.  Last month, BSA worked with USA Today major series underway called “Saving Childhood.” The series looks at some of the underlying themes of how childhood is changing. The series began on Monday, and the articles can be found at savingchildhood.usatoday.com External Link

One of the articles, which is slated to run tomorrow, April 14, will look at how children today spend less time outdoors, and are less active. The BSA provided spokespersons (Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca and Scouts from the Baltimore Area Council) to talk about how BSA is working to be an advocate for youth and to counter these alarming trends by getting kids outdoors and active.  We believe the article will demonstrate that the BSA is an organization with real solutions to offer in the face of the widespread and troubling trend of childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles (as is highlighted in the national strategic plan).

We would like to provide you with examples of local Scouts and families who are improving their through Scouting including discussion on:

  • Local statistics about the impact of obesity and related-health consequences (mortality, economic impact).
  • Access to local who can speak credibly about the trend and its health consequences.
  • Talking about how we are making a difference with local kids.
  • Giving you an opportunity to witness and report on the “Outing” in Scouting by visiting activities happening this weekend.
