Northland volunteers get Silver Beaver Award from national Scout leader

Three adult leaders who have made significant contributions to the Boy Scouts of America’s Voyageurs Area Council in the Northland received one of Scouting’s highest volunteer awards Thursday night from the organization’s national leader during an appearance in Duluth.

Chief Scout Executive Wayne Brock presented the Silver Beaver Award to Elaine Hansen of Duluth and to brothers Patrick Baumann of Virginia and Dan Baumann of Grand Marais during the Scouter Recognition Dinner for the Voyageurs Area Council at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.

The Silver Beaver Award is the council’s distinguished service award. Recipients are adult leaders who have made positive impacts on Scouts through service to their councils. The award recognizes adults who make Scouting programs possible through their hard work, sacrifice, dedication and years of service.

"At a time when adult role models and mentors for our children are needed more than ever, these three individuals stand out because of their years of giving back through Scouting," said David Nolle, Scout Executive for the Voyageurs Area Council. "These are the leaders who make Scouting so important and effective in developing the next generation of leaders and contributors in our communities."

The Voyageurs Area Council covers a 20-county region of northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. More than 4,000 boys and their families participate in Scouting in the region.

Hansen has served as President and Treasurer of the Voyageurs Area Council, overseeing efforts to modernize the council’s accounting and finance systems and improving the financial health of the organization. She began her work in Scouting as a volunteer for Troop 9, chartered to Glen Avon Presbyterian Church in Duluth, where she has worked as a committee member, treasurer and merit badge coordinator. Hansen is Director of the Center for Economic Development at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Dan Baumann has been involved with Scouting since becoming a Cub Scout at age 7. He is an Eagle Scout who went on to volunteer as an adult in several roles, including as Scoutmaster of Troop 167 in Grand Marais from 2000 through 2013. During that time, six of his Scouts achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He currently serves as a merit bade counselor and a unit commissioner. Dan and his wife are the owners of Golden Eagle Lodge, a resort and campground on the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais.

Patrick Baumann is an Eagle Scout who serves as Scoutmaster of Troop 129 in Britt and Virginia. He also is a merit badge counselor and a member of the Eagle Patrol for Wood Badge courses. He works as a physical education specialist for the St. Louis County Public Schools. He is assigned to the Northland Special Education Cooperative based In Virginia, specializing in helping children learn through play-based activities.
