Charter Renewal Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of commonly asked charter renewal questions. Please take a moment to read these over to determine whether or not they may apply to your charter renewal.

When do I need to have my charter renewal finished by?

This is a very important question! Charters are due before the end of December.

A quick and efficient completion depends on your unit’s ability to gather information and fees quickly, gather signatures, and return it to your district representative.

What if I don't get the charter renewal in on time?

Units with late charters suffer a number of problems. First, their unit may no longer covered by the BSA insurance. This means that your leaders could have additional liability in the event of an accident. Second, youth advancements cannot be recorded with Boy Scouts of America. Third, magazine subscriptions of Boys' Life and Scouting will lapse. It takes a full two months for these periodicals to resume their circulation to your home. Finally, your unit will not be eligible for appropriate recognition in Scouting's Journey to Excellence (JTE) program.

What is a charter organization?

A Charter Organization is a religious, civic, or community organization that chooses to sponsor a pack, troop, team, and/or crew. This organization enters into a partnership, which is outlined in the Annual Charter Agreement  with the goal of developing strong and successful men and women.

Who is the executive officer for my unit?

The name of your Executive Officer is listed on the upper-left hand corner of the first page of your charter renewal. This individual acts as a liaison between the charter organization and the Boy Scout unit. The Boy Scouts of America suggests that each unit regularly meet with their Executive Officer to discuss the program, upcoming events, and opportunities to strengthen their partnership.
